Game Notes: South Carolina Week

 • Vanderbilt returns home this weekend, welcoming South Carolina to FirstBank Stadium. The contest marks the first home game for the Commodores after back-to-back games on the road and an open date, marking a span of 28 days away from home. 

• With 5.0 tackles for loss in the matchup at Missouri, senior defensive back Jaylen Mahoney matched the Vanderbilt single-game record for most tackles for loss in a game. He became the first Commodore to record 5.0 tackles for loss in a game since Steven Weatherly registered five against Tennessee in 2014. 

• The Dores have scored three defensive touchdowns this year, which ranks first in the SEC and ties for fourth in the FBS. CJ Taylor has recorded two of Vandy’s three defensive scores this season, with fumble returns against both Hawai’i and Missouri. 

• The Vanderbilt defense forced three turnovers against Missouri, recovering two fumbles and recording one interception. On the season, the Commodores have forced 13 turnovers which is tied for fourth in the SEC. 

• Senior linebacker Anfernee Orji recorded a strong performance against the Tigers. He racked up a team-high tying 12 tackles, while recording 2.5 tackles for loss including 1.0 sack and a forced fumble. The Rockwall, Texas, native also registered his first career interception in the matchup. 

Mike Wright connected with Gamarion Carter for an 80-yard touchdown at Missouri. The touchdown pass marked the longest passing score for the Commodores since Jay Cutler connected with Brandon Smith for an 80-yard touchdown against Tennessee in 2004. 

• Freshman quarterback AJ Swann had 159 consecutive pass attempts to begin his career before throwing his first interception against Missouri. His 159 pass attempts marked the most pass attempts without an interception by a Vanderbilt quarterback to begin his career since 1996 and the most by an SEC quarterback to begin his FBS career since 2002. 

• Vanderbilt has played four games against teams ranked in the AP poll at the time of the contest. No team in FBS has played more ranked foes than the Commodores. Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Stanford and Washington State have also played four ranked foes. 

• Three of Vanderbilt’s ranked games were consecutive contests against top-10 teams. It marked the first time since the AP poll was instituted in 1936 that Vandy faced such a stretch. 

• Vanderbilt chose eight team captains for the 2022 campaign: Ethan Barr, Ben Bresnahan, Daevion Davis, Jaylen Mahoney, Elijah McAllister, Anfernee Orji, Gavin Schoenwald and Mike Wright. The captains were chosen by a vote of players and staff. Davis and McAllister serve as captains for the second consecutive year.
