Former sprinter now mentoring students

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Former Vanderbilt track and field athlete Amani Floyd, was recently mentioned and honored for making an impact in the classroom. Floyd has been mentoring and teaching high school students at an inner-city high school in Mississippi. She has made a huge impact since beginning as a student in the Mississippi Teacher Corps program at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Miss.

Under the direction of Floyd, students at Jackson’s Bailey Magnet School saw their state exam scores in American History increase by more than 10 percent this year.

Floyd, a native of Shaker Heights, Ohio, graduated from Vanderbilt in May 2008 with a degree in Religious Studies. She is currently working towards her master’s degree in education at the University of Mississippi.
