COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Vanderbilt track and field wrapped up the third and final day of the SEC Championships at E.B. Cushing Stadium on Saturday.
Junior Grace Jensen competed for an SEC title in the 1,500 meters. She qualified for the finals of the event with a third-place showing in her heat on Friday. In the race for the title Saturday, Jensen finished 10th overall at 4:21.37.
In the high jump, Sims cleared 5 feet, 7 inches (1.70 meters) to place 13th. She just missed on her three attempts at 5-08.75 feet which would have been her second personal best of the meet in the event — she did so in the heptathlon — and would have matched the fourth-best jump in school history.
Three Commodores represented the black and gold in the 5,000 meters. Senior Gillian Mortimer led Vanderbilt with a 20th-place finish of 17:07.30 and was followed by Niki Narayani (17:53.89) and Caroline Eck (17:55.01).
In the final event of the championship meet, Vanderbilt finished 10th in the 4×400-meter relay. Kaira Brown, Madison Fuller, Jordan Smith and Taiya Shelby combined to finish in 3:39.91.
Vanderbilt has set four school records and recorded 28 top-10 performances during this year’s outdoor campaign, including three top-10 efforts at the SEC Championships.
Next up are the NCAA East Regionals, May 27-29, in Jacksonville, Florida. Entering the conference championships, five Commodores had combined for six performances among the top 48 who would qualify for the NCAA regional —Madison Fuller (100, 200 meters), Haley Bishop (200 meters), Taiya Shelby (400 meters), Ruby Stauber (800 meters), Jensen (1,500 meters).
