Ewing tied for second at Schenkel

STATESBORO, Ga. – Junior Charlie Ewing carded a four-under par, 68, in the first round of the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga., and is in a tie for second with three other golfers after play concluded Friday afternoon. Ewing had five birdies and only one bogey in his round at the par-72, 6,962-yard Forest Heights Country Club, and trails leader Justin Thomas of Alabama by one stroke.

As a team, Vanderbilt is in a tie for fifth place with UAB with a team total of 292, and trails fourth-place UCF by one stroke.

“I’m obviously really pleased with Charlie’s round,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “He was in control of his game today and that was big for our team.”

“As a team, we really competed hard today and I am really proud of that. We made a few mental mistakes that we will learn and grow from. Tomorrow the wind will be up, so we need to be disciplined in order to be successful.

Ewing is tied with Kramer Hickok and Brandon Stone of Texas, and Jose Joia of UCF.

The Commodores also counted scores of 74 from Ben Fogler, and a pair of 75’s from Hunter Stewart and Jordan Janico. Mills Rendell also carded a 76 for Vanderbilt.

Texas leads the team portion of the tournament with a 280 and holds a two stroke lead over Alabama and a five stroke lead over Florida heading into the second round Saturday.
