6/3/2004

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt sophomore distance runner Erika Schneble has been named to the CoSIDA District IV Academic All-American squad, the organization announced today.

A native of Hendersonsville, N.C., Schneble holds a 3.79 grade point average while majoring in neuroscience and art history. On the track, Schneble is preparing to compete in the upcoming NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Schneble’s 2004 track season has been remarkable. After earning NCAA All-Region honors in cross country, Schneble set personal records in 12 consecutive finals prior to winning the SEC outdoor 5,000-meter championship in May. During her streak, Schneble also finished second in the SEC indoor 5,000 meters and become the first Commodore to win an individual event at the prestigious Drake Relays.

She also smashed the Commodore indoor and outdoor records at 5,000 meters. She lowered the indoor mark nearly 30 seconds, then cut the outdoor standard by 40 seconds during a 16:08.18 effort at the Cardinal Invitational two months ago in Palo Alto, Calif. During the season, Schneble ran personal bests from 800 meters to six-kilometers.

Schneble will compete in the 5,000 meters next week at the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas. She enters the race as the nation’s seventh fastest qualifier.

The 2004 CoSIDA University Division All-District IV Academic All-American team is made up of student-athletes from Division I schools in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. Schneble, a second team selection, was one of 20 student-athletes recognized in District IV.

To be nominated for the Academic All-America team, student-athletes must be at least a starter or significant reserve on her team with a 3.20 cumulative grade point average. Team members are selected by a vote of the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district.
