Nashville, Tenn. – The Commodores wrapped up the team’s second practice of the day Saturday night under the lights at the John Rich Practice Facility with an 83-play scrimmage working on a variety of situations.
Senior Larry Smith led the first team offense completing 10 of 25 passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns, including a 40-yard strike to Jordan Matthews during the third down situational part of the scrimmage. Junior Jordan Rodgers led the second team offense completing eight of 17 passes for 49 yards with a pair of interceptions. Freshmen Josh Grady and Kris Kentera split snaps with the third team with Grady completing four of five passes for 41 yards and Kentera going 1-for-2 for seven yards.
Junior Zac Stacy received the majority of the snaps at running back carrying the ball 10 times for 34 yards, including a four-yard touchdown during the team’s goal line work. Two freshmen running backs stood out on the night with Jerron Seymour carrying the ball four times for forty yards and Mitchell Hester had 34 yards on four carries. Hester also scampered in from 11 yards out for a touchdown.
Sophomore Fitz Lassing scored on a 31-yard pass from Smith on the team’s fifth series that covered 75 yards in six plays. Matthews caught two passes for 47 yards and senior Udom Umoh hauled in three passes for 23 yards.
Sophomore Chase Garnham picked off a Rodgers pass on the third series of the night and returned it for a score. Sophomore Andre Hal, who also recovered a fumble, and senior Casey Hayward each picked off passes during the scrimmage. Sophomore Javon Marshall broke up multiple passes from his safety position, including back-to-back plays during the third down situational portion.
Vanderbilt returns to the practice field on Monday with two more practices scheduled.
Notes: Prior to the scrimmage the Dores worked on individual drills with music playing at the practice facility… during the third down situational portion of practice crowd noise was blasted from the speakers.
