NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt women’s tennis will travel to Memphis, Tenn., this weekend (Nov. 2-4) for the Memphis Invitational, as the Commodores wrap up the fall tournament season.
This weekend, Vanderbilt will be one of five teams as the `Dores join Memphis, Oklahoma, Ole Miss and Tulsa, with the tournament being held at the Racquet Club of Memphis.
“There will be some really good competition,” said Vanderbilt head coach Geoff Macdonald. “I feel like we’re in a pretty good place, we’re conditioning well. The freshmen are adjusting and that’s what we want to do, so I feel good where we are as a team.”
There will be three draws consisting of eight players with each playing three matches over the weekend. Singles will be starting at 10 a.m. on Friday and Saturday and 9:45 a.m. on Sunday. Doubles will be played in a dual format.
Vanderbilt will be a little short-handed in Memphis as Coach Macdonald’s squad is battling injuries. Freshmen Frances Altick and Georgina Sellyn will not make the trip due to injuries.
“We’re being really cautious with a couple injuries,” Macdonald said. “We don’t want to take situations where someone can heel and be fine in two weeks and turn it into something that is all season.”
The Commodores are coming off the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Oct. 18-21, in which the team had a lot of success. Ashleigh Antal and Marie Casares advanced to the doubles championship match, while Casares, Lauren Mira and Courtney Colton all advanced to the quarterfinals in singles play.
Following competition this weekend, Vanderbilt picks up play Jan. 18-20, at the Miami Invitational in Coral Gables, Fla.
