SEA ISLAND, Ga. – The 15th-ranked Vanderbilt men’s golf team is in a tie for ninth after the first round of the SEC Championship in Sea Island, Ga., after posting a team total of 288 on Friday at the Seaside Course at the Sea Island Golf Club. Senior Charlie Ewing and junior Ben Fogler each carded a one-over par, 71, to lead the Commodores in the first round.

The Commodores are tied with Texas A&M and Missouri for ninth, but only trail Kentucky and Mississippi State, who are in a tie for seventh, by one stroke heading into the second round Saturday. The 14-team field features seven of the nation’s top 25 teams, and nine in the top 40.

“Today was certainly not our best, however I thought we hung in there well and showed some character coming in on the back nine,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “Ben and Charlie played solid and the other two hung in there. Obviously, Hunter had a tough day, but he will rebound and play well the next couple of days. This is a three round battle and our guys will be ready to compete tomorrow.”

After Ewing and Fogler’s 71, the Commodores counted a 73 from both sophomores Carson Jacobs and Zack Jaworski. Hunter Stewart carded a first-round 80 Friday.

Number-one ranked Alabama leads the team standings by two shots over Auburn after shooting a 272, with the Crimson Tide’s Bobby Wyatt and South Carolina’s Matthew NeSmith tied atop the individual leader board after each fired a five-under par, 65.

The Commodores will tee off at 9 a.m. ET off of the number 10 tee, and will play with Texas A&M and Tennessee in the second round.
