Dores T-5th after 1st round of Franklin Regional

FRANKLIN, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt men’s golf team is in a tie for fifth with Virginia after the first day of play at the NCAA Franklin Regional at the Vanderbilt Legends Club’s North Course with a first-round total of 285. Texas leads all teams after carding a 20-under par, 268, in their round Monday, and lead second-place East Carolina by 11 shots heading into the second round of play Tuesday.

The Commodores counted a pair of 70’s from freshman Patrick Martin and sophomore Theo Humphrey, respectively, an even-par 72 from freshman Will Gordon, and a pair of 73’s from junior Matthias Schwab and senior Carson Jacobs.

Vanderbilt remains in contention after the first day of play – the top five teams and top individual not affiliated with those teams advance to the NCAA Championship in Eugene, Oregon, May 27-June 1.

“I really thought we finished strong today to post a solid score,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “We didn’t play our best and our guys know that. We have to continue to value our ball and do the simple things better. However, we stayed patient and we know there is a lot of golf still to be played. Tomorrow is important and we need to embrace that.”

The Longhorns’ performance included a tournament-low 64 from Doug Ghim and a 65 from Taylor Funk. Texas also counted a 69 from Scottie Scheffler and a 70 from Gavin Hall, and threw out a one-over 73 from the number one player in the nation, Beau Hossler.

“Our finish was outstanding,” said Texas head coach John Fields. “Doug Ghim shoots a 64 today and Taylor Funk shoots a 65. I’m really happy for those guys and I’m happy for our team. It’s not a one-man show, they are all really fine players. That being said, we still have two days to play here and we have to be focused. We will enjoy this round over lunch, but then we have to get prepared for the next rounds. I’m really happy for the guys, that was an extraordinary round.

Ghim leads all individuals with a one-shot lead over Houston’s Michael Perras, Carl Yuan, and his teammate Funk.

The second round of the tournament continues on Tuesday.
