TAMPA, Fla. – The Vanderbilt women’s soccer team came away from its trip to South Florida with a pair of shutout victories this weekend in the 2011 Dafeldecker Classic after Sunday’s 2-0 win over the College of Charleston.
Junior Dana Schwartz and freshman Cherrelle Jarrett scored goals fot the Commodores, who had defeated host USF on Friday, 2-0.
“I thought we played really well this weekend,” VU Head Coach Derek Greene said. “We got two great wins on the road. Our team did a fantastic job of responding today. We talked about how important it is to bounce back after a great win, in the same way that you put a big loss behind you.”
After a scoreless first half, Vanderbilt broke through in the 55th minute. The Commodores won a throw-in on the right side deep in Charleston territory. The throw went to Schwartz, who spun her player and rifled a left-footed shot into the upper 90.
Vanderbilt got an insurance goal in the 81st minute off a corner kick. Senior Elizabeth Lillie served a ball into the box, and Jarrett found a hole in the defense to power a header past Charleston’s goalkeeper.
The Commodores outshot Charleston, 10-9, in the game and held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman goalkeeper Brittanie Barbero made two saves in her first collegiate start to earn the shutout.
“College of Charleston is a well-coached team,” Greene said. “Their defense is very organized and they were dangerous on the counterattack when we lost the ball. But our team did what they were supposed to do and I was proud of their effort.”
Vanderbilt returns home this week to open a three-game home stand against Middle Tennessee State on Friday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. CT at the VU Soccer Complex.
