Dores shut out Arkansas, 2-0

NASHVILLE,  Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s soccer team completed a six-point weekend on Sunday, Oct. 9, with a 2-0 victory over Southeastern Conference rival Arkansas at the VU Soccer Complex.

Vanderbilt scored its two goals in a 91-second span of the second half, with seniors Elizabeth Lillie notching the eventual game-winner in the 61st minute before classmate Candace West iced the game in the 63rd minute.

The Commodores outshot the Razorbacks, 17-14, on the day, and held an 8-4 advantage in shots in the second half. Many of Arkansas’ shots came from distance, and VU junior goalkeeper Jessica Amlaw needed to make only three saves to earn her first SEC shutout.

Following a scoreless first half, the Commodores ramped up the pressure in the first 15 minutes of the second stanza. In the 61st minute, sophomore Abby Carr played Gena Inbusch into the left corner, and the freshman whipped a cross toward the near post that Lillie volleyed past UA keeper Emily Lillard. It was Lillie’s first goal of the season and the second of her VU career.

Less than two minutes later, Inbusch again used a low cross from the left side to find Lillie, this time near the penalty spot. Lillie laid the ball back to West, who took a quick dribble then rocketed a shot inside the near post. It was West’s fourth goal of the year and the 15th of her career.

The Commodores will continue their current home stand next weekend when Georgia and Tennessee visit Nashville. Vanderbilt will play host to the Bulldogs on Friday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. CT. The Dores and Lady Vols are then scheduled to face off on Sunday, Oct. 16, at 1 p.m., with the game airing on CSS.
