Dores Out Front After 18

Vandy, Sargent have early lead at Mason Rudolph

FRANKLIN, Tenn. — Vanderbilt jumped out to a commanding lead after 18 holes Monday at the Mason Rudolph Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Club.

The Commodores shot a 274 and are 10-under-par going into Tuesday’s second round. Mississippi State and Tennessee are tied for second and six shots back.

Three Dores landed in the top five, and four in the top 10, after Monday’s first round led by Gordon Sargent. Fresh off a trip to the Masters Tournament, Sargent shot a 66 and has a one-shot lead over teammate Cole Sherwood.

Reid Davenport, competing as an individual, carded a 68 and is tied for third overall. Matthew Riedel was 2-under-par and is tied for eight.

“I thought we did a lot of good things out there today. I’m especially excited about how we finished the round really strong,” Vandy head coach Scott Limbaugh said. “It was good seeing Cole get off to a good start early and play a very good round. Also, Gordon was steady all day and I thought did a great job staying focused and having fun.

“Matthew was steady and did a good job not trying to force anything and that allowed him to finish so strong. I’m happy to see Reid play a good first round and I thought he had a good up and down on 16 that helped him keep his momentum going. You have to really be able to lock in during those key momentum times during your round and really get your focus at the highest levels when the shot calls for it.”

William Moll (+1) is tied for 28th overall while Wells Williams (+4) is tied for 58th. Competing as individuals, Jansen Preston shot a 77 and Jackson Van Paris finished with a 73.

The Commodores are scheduled to tee off at 12:02 p.m. Tuesday alongside Mississippi State and Tennessee. Live scoring for the event can be found HERE.

“Today was a good start and closer to our standards,” Limbaugh said. “Tuesday will be another new opportunity and we need to be ready to go from the start. We don’t need to assume anything and really just need to focus on going to play the game we love and having fun.

“I’m thankful for the support we had out there today and would love to see more the rest of the week.”
