Women’s tennis earns double header sweep Friday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt women’s tennis swept the competition Friday, earning a pair of home victories in a double header. The Commodores took the first match of the day over East Tennessee State, 5-2, before sweeping North Alabama, 7-0, to pick up their second win of the day.

Against the Bucs 

  • At top doubles, Anna Ross and Holly Staff teamed up to defeat their East Tennessee State competition, 6-3. 
  • Both Court 2 and Court 3 were pushed to extra tennis as both sides were locked in 5-5 ties. Anessa Lee and Yufei Long clinched the doubles point on Court 2 with a 7-5 win before Marcella Cruz and Dasha Kourkina completed the sweep with a 7-6(0) win on Court 3. 
  • In singles the Dores went 4-2 with Ross ultimately clinching the match with a win at No. 1 singles. 
  • Staff added to the Dores’ lead with her 6-0 and 6-1 set wins on Court 4 singles. 
  • Cruz made it 3-0 Dores with her win in straight sets on Court 5, 6-0 and 6-3. 
  • Ross clinched the match with East Tennessee when she finished Court 1 in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-4. 
  • The Bucs grabbed a point on Court 3 when Long dropped a close two-set contest, 3-6 and 2-6. 
  • After losing the set one tiebreak, Lee fell at No. 2 doubles 2-6 in the second set. 
  • Kourkina rounded out the first match of the day with a dominant two-set win on Court 6, 6-0 and 6-1 for the 5-2 final, Friday. 

Against the Lions 

  • The Dores jumped out to a quick lead with the doubles point as all three courts took 6-1 victories over the visiting competition. 
  • Dasha Kourkina and MaryAnn Rompf finished first with a convincing win at No. 3 doubles to give the home team the edge. 
  • Anna Ross and Amy Stevens clinched the point, finishing second at Court 1. Moments later, Marcella Cruz and Holly Staff rounded out the match to secure the sweep at doubles. 
  • Stevens did not drop a game en route to a pair of 6-0 set wins at No. 5 singles to give the Dores the 2-0 lead. 
  • Kourkina claimed a set of 6-1 and 6-2 victories on Court 4 to finish 4-0 in singles competition on the day. 
  • Lee called game with the fourth point of the night when she clinched a pair of 6-2 set wins at top singles.  
  • Staff extended the Dores lead to five with her two set victory on Court 2. After picking up a 6-1 win in the first set, she took set two, 6-3, to go undefeated on the day at singles. 
  • Cruz continued the trend with a pair of 6-4 wins at No. 3 singles to give Vandy the 6-0 lead with one court left to play out. 
  • MaryAnn Rompf completed the sweep with strong 6-2 and 6-1 set wins on Court 6.
