Dores lose to Texas at East Lake Cup

Match Play Results

ATLANTA – The Vanderbilt men’s golf team dropped a 4-1 decision to Texas in the consolation match of the East Lake Cup on Wednesday at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga.

The Commodores, who lost a hard-fought semifinal match to the defending national champion Oregon Ducks on Tuesday, received a point from sophomore Patrick Martin, who won his match, 1-up, over Taylor Funk. Martin was 2-0 in the two days of match play competition.

Texas’ four wins came from Scottie Scheffler, who defeated Will Gordon, 1-up, Gavin Hall, who knocked off Matthias Schwab, 4 and 3, Doug Ghim defeated John Augenstein, 1-up, and Steven Chervony beat Theo Humphrey, 7 and 6.

The loss to the Longhorns closes out Vanderbilt’s stellar fall season, a season that featured one team title, a runner-up finish, a stroke-play title at the East Lake Cup, and a number-one ranking in the Golfstat.com rankings.

“Overall for the fall season, we had a very nice fall season,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “We really did a lot of good things. I hate that it ended on a sour note, but the good thing is is that it’s not the end. It’s the beginning of us working for several months to become the best team we can be when it matters the most.

“I’m really proud of Patrick and how he played this week. He was 2-0, and I put him out there first for a reason this morning to get a point up, and he did that. I think Will, who doesn’t have his best game right now, continues to show what he’s made of. He didn’t pull either one of them out, but I’m proud of how he was able to hang in there. Overall, it’s certainly disappointing. We didn’t show up with the kind of mentality that it takes, and we have to learn from this. We have to learn what it takes to have a little more fire about you and not sit back and hope that good things happen instead of going out there to make things happen. I think we will. I know that our team matters to our guys, and I know they’ll learn from this, and we’ll have an opportunity down the road to show that we’ve had some growth.”
