Dores knock off Virginia in DICK's Collegiate Cup, 3-2.

Final Match Play Results

KINGSTON SPRINGS, Tenn. – The Commodore men’s golf team capped a stellar weekend at the Golf Club of Tennessee on Sunday with a 3-2 match play win over the top-seeded team from the ACC, Virginia Cavaliers, at the DICK’s Collegiate Challenge Cup. Vanderbilt received wins from junior Matthias Schwab and a pair of freshmen, Will Gordon and Patrick Martin.

“The guys came out excited and energized for match play, ” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “Matthias was just awesome. He was eight-under through 14 holes and set the tone for us. The freshmen (Will and Patrick) were also very good today, securing points for us to get a win over a good opponent. It was another day with a lot of good experience that can help us down the road. I am really proud of this group.”

Schwab knocked off Virginia’s number one player, Derek Bard, 5 & 3, Gordon defeated Jimmy Stanger 2 & 1, and Martin won his match, 4 & 3, over Danny Walker. Virginia’s two wins came from Thomas Walsh, who defeated Spencer Ciesla, 1 up, and Nick McLaughlin, who knocked off Zack Jaworski, 2 up.

“We have a quick turnaround before heading out west for the Nike Collegiate Invitational,” said Limbaugh. “I think there are some simple things we can continue to do better and we will focus on those things this week.”
