Dores in the Hunt for Titles

Bridget Stammel, Celia-Belle Mohr/Anessa Lee tandem advance to finals at Kitty Harrison Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team won five matches on Day 2 of the Kitty Harrison Invitational. The Commodores will be represented in singles and doubles finals in the event that concludes Sunday.

Sophomore Bridget Stammel, seeded third in the White bracket, downed UNC’s Theadora Rabman in straight sets (6-4, 6,2) to advance to Sunday’s final against another Tar Heel Carson Tanguilig, who is the No. 1 seed in the White bracket. The two will battle for the title at 9:15 a.m. CT.

The doubles team of sophomore Celia-Belle Mohr and senior Anessa Lee won their semifinal match in the Ram Bracket over Lucia Quiterio and Ruxi Schech of Charlotte. The Vandy duo will face a team from NC State’s Gabriella Broadfoot and Abigail Rencheli in Sunday’s final, set for 8 a.m. CT.

Mohr also picked up a singles win on the consolation side of the Blue bracket, as she downed Florida’s Malwina Rowinska, 7-6 (4), 6-0. Senior Holly Staff claimed a 6-4, 6-3 straight-set victory over Dani Medvedeva of Clemson. Mohr and Staff will face each other in Sunday’s finale. Junior Amy Stevens captured a victory in the White group consolation bracket, as she defeated Auburn’s Esposito Cogan, 6-4, 6-4.

“Everyone competed hard today which is what we put a focus on for the weekend, so I was really pleased,” said Vanderbilt head coach Aleke Tsoubanos. “Celia-Belle and Anessa played a great doubles match with a talented and tricky Charlotte team to reach the final of their flight tomorrow. They have played well together all weekend.

Individually, I thought Bridget had an outstanding performance in singles. She played nearly flawless tennis and got a great win over Rabman of UNC to put herself into the finals of her flight. Holly and Celia had gritty matches picking up their second singles wins of the tournament. Really proud of the way Amy played today against Cogan of Auburn, she rebounded very well from a tough day yesterday.”

The Commodores will resume action at the Kitty Harrison Invitational with doubles at 8 a.m. CT Sunday and singles beginning at 9:15 a.m. CT. Draws can be found here and matches can be streamed here.
