First Round Results

SEA ISLAND, Ga. – The Vanderbilt men’s golf team finished the first round of the SEC Championship in 10th place after posting a first-round total of 295, with freshman Zack Jaworski leading the way after carding a one-over par, 71. The Commodores trail ninth-place Missouri by three strokes.

“I thought we got off to a good start and took advantage of good conditions to start the round,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “I was pleased with how the guys competed all day long. We just didn’t finish the round to our standard. We have to continue to be able to focus on the right things on each shot, especially when the wind blows like it did today. I know the guys will learn from their mistakes and will be excited to have the opportunity to compete again tomorrow.”

Jaworski had two birdies, a bogey, and a double bogey in his first time around the par-70, 6,991-yard Seaside Course in route to his 71. The Commodores also counted a 74 from sophomores Hunter Stewart and Ben Fogler, and a 76 from sophomore Jordan Janico. Junior Charlie Ewing carded a first-round 77.

Auburn leads the tournament after posting a five-under par, 275, and leads second-place South Carolina by four strokes. The Gamecocks’ Caleb Sturgeon shot a first-round 65 to lead all individuals, with a pair of Auburn players, Niclas Carlsson and Michael Hebert, and Georgia’s NIcholas Reach one stroke behind at four-under, 66.

The second round of the tournament continues on Saturday morning.
