Dores hand LSU first SEC loss

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Freshman Gena Inbusch calmly finished a breakaway goal in the 103rd minute to propel Vanderbilt to a 2-1 overtime victory over visiting LSU Friday at the VU Soccer Complex.

Inbusch got behind the LSU defense with a wonderful run, receiving a pass from senior Emily Grant and taking two touches into the 18-yard box before chipping over a charging LSU goalkeeper for the golden goal.

Vanderbilt made it to its first overtime of the 2011 season thanks in part to an equalizer from junior C.J. Rhoades. Commodore sophomore Abby Carr was fouled just outside the 18-yard box in 67th minute, and senior Candace West lined up over the free kick. West’s left-footed serve found Rhoades’ head at the edge of the six-yard box, and the redirection slid past the back post to tie the game at 1-1.

After a scoreless first half, LSU got on the board in the 57th minute off a free kick from the left side. With the ball loose inside the six-yard box, Carlie Banks took a shot that was saved by VU goalkeeper Jessica Amlaw, but Tiger Addie Eggleston put home the rebound to give LSU a 1-0 advantage.

Amlaw made six saves in the game, including three in the second half and two more in extra time. LSU’s Mo Isom made four saves for the Tigers.

Friday’s game was designated as Vanderbilt’s “Power in Pink” game to raise awareness of breast cancer. Vanderbilt players sported pink shoelaces, head bands and wristbands.

The Commodores will continue their four-game home stand on Sunday, Oct. 9, when Arkansas visits the Music City for a 2 p.m. CT game at the VU Soccer Complex.
