BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Vanderbilt track team got a head start on the indoor track season at the Birmingham-Southern Indoor Ice Breaker, highlighted by Brionne Williams winning the high jump.
Williams set a personal record with a jump of five feet, 11.5 inches (1.82 meters). The junior was competing in her hometown and cleared the height after being the only athlete to clear 1.74 meters.
Head Coach Steve Keith was thrilled with the performance from Williams.
“The highlight of the evening was Brionne,” Keith said. “It was a huge PR and a mark that we think will put her high on the national list.”
She wasn’t the only Commodore to win on the day, as freshman Sara Barron won the mile with a time of 4:59.51. Katherine Delaney finished fourth with a time of 5:07.49.
Vanderbilt athletes finished 2-3 in the 60 meter hurdles. Jennifer Cannon finished second with a time of 8.75 seconds, while Faith Washington was third with a mark of 8.80 seconds.
Barron followed up her mile win with a fifth place finish in the 800 meters. She clocked a time of 2:16.96.
“Sara had a good opening double and all of our young hurdlers got a good taste of their first collegiate competition, with all four making the finals,” Keith explained.
Keith was pleased with the chance to get out and compete before the end of the semester.
“Very nice effort to finish off our fall training,” Keith said. “It was good to get an idea of where we are as we head into finals and winter break.”
The Commodores will get into full swing with the outdoor season when they visit Kentucky January 11-12.
“We brought a small group, but we accomplished quite a bit. Now it’s time to use this feedback productively and then get ready for finals,” Keith concluded.
