ATHENS, Ga. — Jennifer Cannon posted the fifth-best heptathlon score in Vanderbilt’s outdoor history and Faith Washington won the 400 meter hurdles as the Commodore track and field team wrapped-up weekend competition at the Bulldog Heptathlon and Spec Towns National Team Invitational at the University of Georgia.
Cannon scored 5,124 points in her first collegiate heptathlon. After winning the 100 meter hurdles and 200 meters on Friday, the freshman placed fifth in the long jump (5.26 meters/17′ 3.25″), third in the javelin (28.89 meters/94′ 9″) and second in the 800 meters (2:23.47). She placed second in the heptathlon behind 5,701 points from Georgia’s Lucie Ondraschkova.
In the Spec Towns National Team Invitational, Vanderbilt competed in several events, including the 400 meter hurdles, pole vault and high jump.
Washington won the 400 meter hurdles in 59.00 seconds. The time is not only a personal best for the freshman, but the third-best 400 hurdles time in program history. Two of the top-four times in program history are now owned by freshmen in the 400 hurdles, as Cannon earlier ran it in 60.33 which is fourth-best.
Pole vault action saw Morgan Toone and Alyson Hasty place sixth and seventh, respectively. They both cleared 3.50 meters (11′ 5.75″), but Hasty took an extra jump to clear 3.35 meters.
Ellie Tidman cleared 1.71 meters (5′ 7.25″) to place first in the standard high jump field before clearing 1.73 meters (5′ 8″) in the invitational high jump field to place seventh.
Next up for the Commodores, several distance/middle-distance runners are expected to travel to California for the Mt. SAC Relays on Thursday, April 18. Then over the weekend is the annual Vanderbilt Invitational, April 19-20, at the Vanderbilt Track.
