The Commodores wrapped up their second week of Fall Ball with a pair of scrimmages before taking off for Fall Break on Thursday.
On Tuesday afternoon, the new Hawkins Field playing surface was already paying dividends after two straight days of rain in Nashville. Head Coach Tim Corbin was very pleased to be on the field and practicing at full capacity, something that would have been nearly impossible with a natural surface.
T.J. Pecoraro also took advantage of being on the field Tuesday, dominating over his two frames. The junior right-hander struck out the side in the first and allowed one hit with four strikeouts in an outstanding two-inning outing. From there the offenses took over, John Norwood drove in a run before freshman Rhett Wiseman reached on an infield single. With Norwood on third and Wiseman on second, freshman Dansby Swanson plated both runners with a sacrifice fly to deep right field. Connor Castellano knocked in a run with a double and Mike Yastrzemski pushed two across with a triple. Will Cooper continued his hot start to fall practice with a single. Freshman Carson Fulmer turned in two more quality innings, allowing no runs and striking out one.
The Dores’ bats again were center stage in Wednesday’s scrimmage with Connor Harrell and Norwood leading the way. Harrell knocked in two runs and scored twice while picking up a single and triple on the afternoon. Norwood collected three hits and knocked in a run to push his two-day total to four hits. Cooper was in the mix again offensively with a single and run scored but his play of the day came on a diving catch in left field to rob a base hit. Swanson displayed his speed midway through the scrimmage reaching on infield single, stealing second and eventually scoring. Sophomore catcher Chris Harvey racked up a pair of singles, driving in a run and scoring a run. Junior Joel McKeithan and Castellano each doubled and scored late in the scrimmage. Philip Pfeifer was solid in his two innings of work fanning four and allowing two runs on one hit.
The Commodores are scheduled to return to the field on Tuesday afternoon following a four-day break for Fall Break.
