GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team closed out the 33rd annual Debbie Southern Fall Classic by earning six singles victories on Sunday at the Mickel Tennis Center.
“Today was a very good day and an impressive finish to a highly competitive tournament. I’m proud of the team for competing so hard on the final day of a tough and grueling event,” said head coach Geoff Macdonald.
In flight one, sophomore Georgia Drummy collected her second consecutive singles victory of the tournament defeating South Carolina’s Mia Horvit. Drummy bounced back from a 2-6 deficit in the first set to claim the second and third sets, 7-6, 6-4, earning the sophomore the championship title of the back draw.
Senior Christina Rosca continued to dominate in flight two winning the back draw of her flight with a straight set victory over South Carolina’s Megan Davies. Rosca held the Gamecock to only two games in the first set followed by a 6-3 triumph in the third set. With this win, Rosca notches a two-match win streak in singles.
Junior Amanda Meyer, who only sports one lone loss in the fall season collected her fifth victory on Sunday against Texas’s Marta Perez-Mur. Meyer bounced back from dropping the first seeet, 6-2, to claim the win earning a 7-5 defeat in the second set and 1-0 (10-7) victory to determine the match.
Freshmen Dasha Kourkina and Anna Ross maintained their successful collegiate debuts as they closed out the Classic with victories in their respective flights.
Kourkina tabbed her second victory of the weekend defeating Florida State’s Mira Stegman in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5, while Ross took down Georgia Tech’s Nadia Gizdova, 6-2, 7-5.
Closing out the Classic on a high note, senior Emma Kurtz battled against Mississippi State’s Tamara Racine in three sets taking down Racine, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-1 notching her second consecutive victory of the tournament.
The Dores will be back in action on Oct. 5 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as they compete in the ITA All Americans.
