WINDERMERE, Fla. – The Vanderbilt men’s golf team, currently ranked number 20 in the latest Golfweek rankings, finished the prestigious Isleworth Collegiate Invitational in sixth position, knocking off three top 20 teams and ending the tournament with a team score of 875 (287-292-296). Freshman Matthias Schwab was the Commodores’ top finisher, carding a three-round total of 219 (70-74-75) and placing in a tie for 24th on the individual leader board.

“I was proud of the team effort today and throughout the week,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “We challenged them to control the things we can control and play with passion, and we did a good job with that. The course played over two shots harder today than the first round. Obviously, Charlie played a good round for our team today and we certainly needed it. We did a good job of hanging in there all day. Going forward, we want to build off some of the positive areas we grew on this week so we can finish this fall strong.”

Although Schwab was Vanderbilt’s top performer for the tournament, senior Charlie Ewing had the low round of the day for the team on Tuesday, firing a one-under par, 71. The Commodores’ other counting scores from Tuesday were a pair of 75’s from juniors Ben Fogler and Jordan Janico, respectively. Junior Hunter Stewart carded a third-round 77 in his final 18 holes at the Isleworth Country Club.

Vanderbilt’s total of 875 was two strokes better than 2012 national champion Texas, who finished in seventh, and five strokes behind fifth-place Florida State.

Alabama led wire-to-wire at the tournament, finishing the event with a score of 838 (280-272-286), 12 strokes better than second-place UCF. The Crimson Tide’s Trey Mullinax, who carded an 11-under par, 205 (66-68-71) also led wire-to-wire to claim medalist honors, winning the tournament by four strokes over Florida State’s Hank Lebioda.

The Commodores return to the course for their final fall tournament of the season at the Eagle/Osprey Intercollegiate November 4 and 5 in Jacksonville, Fla.
