Dores fall to No. 11 Memphis, 2-0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Commodore women’s soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to 11th-ranked Memphis Thursday at the VU Soccer Complex.

After a scoreless first half, the Tigers broke through in the 47th minute. It was the first goal Vanderbilt has allowed in over 346 minutes of play, dating back to an August 28 game against Missouri State. Memphis would score again in the 60th minute to ice the victory.

Vanderbilt nearly took a 1-0 lead in the first minute of play. The Commodores connected on a string of passes to find freshman Ashley Oswald on the left side of the 18-yard box, but Memphis goalkeeper Elise Kuhar-Pitters made a nice play to close Oswald down and save her shot on goal. Kuhar-Pitters has not allowed a goal this season for the 8-0 Tigers.

Overall, Memphis held a 13-7 advantage in shots, but only managed to guide three on frame. Vanderbilt notched four shots on goal.

The 5-2 Commodores will close out their 2011 non-conference schedule on Sunday, Sept. 18, by playing host to Samford for a 2 p.m. CT meeting at the VU Soccer Complex.
