Dores Excel in Doubles

Second day in the books

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Day 2 of the Debbie Southern Furman Fall Invitational featured a strong doubles performance by the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team. The Commodores went 2-1 in doubles on Saturday.

“Overall, we fought hard again today but came up just short in some closely contested matches,” Vanderbilt head coach Aleke Tsoubanos said. “Marcella (Cruz) and Bridget (Stammel) fought back to win their doubles final against a very good Duke team – super happy with the way they closed out that match. CB (Celia-Bella Mohr) and Ness (Anessa Lee) also played great doubles to pull out a second win this weekend as a duo. Our freshmen were once again really impressive today. Bridget had a great match with an experienced player in Shvets (5th-year transfer from Princeton) and pulled out a tough three setter. Sonya (Macavei) battled through to a straight-sets win over freshman Katie Codd of Duke. We lost some close sets in breakers and two three set matches for Holly (Staff) and CB but again thought we fought hard. The third day tomorrow will be a good physical test to see where we are in that regard and hopefully we can take advantage of some great individual opportunities.”

Marcella Cruz and Bridget Stammel won their doubles flight in comeback fashion. Trailing Emma Jackson and Brianna Shvets of Duke by a 5-2 score, the Cruz/Stammel duo stormed back to earn an 8-6 victory to win the Flight 3 bracket.

In Flight 1 doubles, Anessa Lee paired with Celia-Belle Mohr for an 8-2 victory against Furman’s Jess Dawson and Sara Snyder.

The Commodores secured a pair of singles victories on the day courtesy of their freshmen. Competing in Flight 4, Stammel fought for a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 win over Shvets. Fellow freshman Sonya Macavei also won her Flight 5 singles match by a score of 6-2, 6-4 over Duke’s Katie Codd.

The final day of the Debbie Southern Furman Fall Invitational is slated for Sunday.
