Day one complete at Nike Collegiate Invitational

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Commodore men’s golf team finished the first round of the Nike Collegiate Invitational in 12th place on the team leader board after carding a one-under, 283 total on the par-71, 6,834-yard Ghost Creek Course at Pumpkin Ridge in Portland, Oregon. Junior Matthias Schwab and freshman Will Gordon led the way for Vanderbilt Sunday, with each shooting a two-under par, 69.

Vanderbilt also counted a one-over par, 72, from senior Spencer Ciesla and a two-over, 73, from freshman Patrick Martin.

“It was really a day that if we had finished better we would feel totally different,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “I thought that we didn’t play our best golf, but the guys hung in there well. We were just a little sloppy at the end. We have to continue to learn the value of a shot and it’s all part of growing as a team. Matthias and Will were both solid today.”

The Commodores trail team leader Wake Forest by 14 shots heading into the second round Monday, which takes place at Pumpkin Ridge’s Witch Hollow Course. The Demon Deacons hold a three stroke lead on USC, and also feature the individual leader after 18 holes in Davis Womble, who finished Sunday’s round with a seven-under par, 64.

“I think the guys will be excited to play tomorrow and it’s certainly another great opportunity for us,” said Limbaugh. “It’s a three round tournament and there is a lot of golf to be played.”
