Curran Makes 54-Hole Cut At NCAAs

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Vanderbilt sophomore Jon Curran shot a two-over 72 on Friday to remain only two shots off the pace with 18 holes left to play of the 2007 NCAA Championships at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club.

Currently running tied for fourth behind a logjam of leaders, Curran advances to play on Saturday despite the Commodores falling victim to the 54-hole cut. Vanderbilt finished Friday’s round in a tie for 21st position. Only the 15-lowest teams will play for the national championship on Saturday.

Sophomore Tyler Matthews and freshman Hudson Johnson led the Commodores on Friday, each carding one-over 71’s. Senior Luke List finished his illustrious career with a two-over performance. Junior Billy Whalen went seven-over in today’s round.

Curran’s 64 on Thursday was the second-best round ever shot by a Commodore during team play. Another below-par number will likely be required to compete for the national title.

Three players — Stanford’s Rob Grube, Clemson’s Kyle Stanley and Georgia Tech’s Cameron Tringale — are tied for the lead at six-under. Four more players stand just one stroke behind at five-under. Curran is tied with Stanford’s Zach Miller and Florida State’s Matthew Savage at four-under. In all, 27 players are at-or-below par for the tournament.

Curran will join Southern Cal’s Jamie Lovemark and North Carolina’s Martin Ureta in the first tee group of the day, leaving from the first hole at 7:18 a.m. CT.

In the team competition, Stanford holds a two-stroke lead over Coastal Carolina. Charlotte and Alabama are tied for third, 10 strokes behind the Chanticleers.
