EL PASO, Texas — Vanderbilt junior Jon Curran stands at 19th place after two rounds of the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic held at the 6,837-yard, par-71 El Paso Country Club.
Wake Forest’s Webb Simpson tied the course and tournament record with a first round 62, but steady play by San Diego State’s Aaron Goldberg gave the senior a one-shot lead.
Simpson, a senior from Raleigh, N.C., recorded nine birdies in the first round, including six over a seven-hole span. His bogey-free round helped him card a 62, which was established as the course and tournament record last year, when Vanderbilt’s Luke List did it in the first round and Florida’s Billy Horschel tied the mark in the second round.
Goldberg, a senior from Encinitas, Calif., recorded rounds of 66 and 67 to take a one stroke lead over Simpson and Oklahoma State’s Tyler Leon. Goldberg stayed consistent throughout the day, carding 11 birdies and just two bogeys on the day to get to nine-under par.
Leon, a junior from Dallas, was up and down in the first round, but steadied his game in the second round. He closed out the day carding four birdies over the final five holes.
Georgia Tech’s Chesson Hadley and Arkansas’ Andrew Landry sit three shots off the pace at six-under par. Hadley came on in the second round, with a five-under 66, while Landry fired rounds of 67 and 69.
The third and final round is set to start at 8 a.m. at El Paso Country Club.
Each university that has a player participating in the tournament will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Over the past 32 years, the Sun Bowl Association has donated over $600,000 to collegiate golf through this scholarship program.
