PALM DESERT, Calif. – Following a straight-set victory over Syracuse’s Miranda Ramirez, Fernanda Contreras is moving on to the round of 16 at the Oracle ITA Fall National Championships.

Competing at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa, Contreras and Ramirez battled back and forth throughout the opening set with the junior Commodore sealing the first-set advantage, 7-5.

Contreras, who won the ITA’s previous tournament, blew through the second set in her round of 32 match up. The Austin, Texas native took four straight games before allowing Ramirez her lone game of the set, sealing the victory, 7-5, 6-1.

VU’s Christina Rosca faces Duke’s Kelly Chen in the first round of consolation singles play. Like Contreras matchup, the duo fought for every point throughout the first set, rarely breaking serve. Chen earned the first set advantage, 7-5, then powered through the second set to advance in back draw play, 7-5, 6-1.

Contreras will face Loyola Marymount’s Veronica Miroshnichenko. The freshman Lion defeated a familiar foe in Ole Miss’s Arianne Hartono to secure her place in the Sweet 16.
