NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt starter Tyler Beede pitched the No. 2 Commodores by Florida 6-1 Saturday night at Hawkins Field to even the series.
Beede picked up where he left off last weekend at Auburn cruising through the first three innings without allowing a hit. The right-hander turned in a scoreless outing last week against the Tigers and did the same thing against Florida (11-13, 2-3) Saturday night. Beede did not allow a hit until the fourth inning when Justin Shafer singled to center but that single would be one of only two allowed by Beede on the night. The sophomore’s night came to an end after a single and a pair of walks loaded the bases with one out in the seventh. Steven Rice, however, pitched the Commodores (20-4, 4-1) out of the jam thanks to a highlight play by Tony Kemp, who dove to his left to snag a line drive and double off the runner at second base to end the inning.
One night after a season-low three-hit game, the Vanderbilt offense pounded out 15 hits Saturday scoring three runs in the first. Connor Harrell ignited a two-out rally with a single and scored on Conrad Gregor’s first single of the night through the right side of the infield. Back-to-back doubles followed from Vince Conde and Rhett Wiseman to push the VU lead to three runs after one inning. Harrell and Gregor were back at it in the third when Harrell singled, stole second and came around to score on Gregor’s second single of the night. Spencer Navin made it a six-run game in the fifth when he ripped a double over Harrison Bader in center field to score Gregor and Conde.
Head Coach Tim Corbin shuffled the lineup batting Harrell third, Gregor fourth, Conde fifth and Jack Lupo eighth. All four players responded, combining to go 11-for-16 with six runs scored. Gregor and Harrell led the way with three hits and two runs scored apiece. Lupo added three hits and stole his team-best 11th base of the season. Vickash Ramjit had two of Florida’s six hits in the game.
Beede (6-0) earned his sixth win of the season scattering two hits over 6.1 scoreless innings with five walks and four strikeouts. Florida starter Jonathon Crawford (0-4) took the loss allowing six runs on 12 hits with seven strikeouts in six innings of work.
The Commodores and Gators are set to play the rubber match tomorrow at noon at Hawkins Field. Lefty Philip Pfeifer (2-0) gets the ball for the home team.
