Commodores Resume Season in Coral Gables

Vandy completes tri-meet against Hurricanes and Hawkeyes to open spring schedule

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Vanderbilt swimming returned to action for the first time in over six weeks when it competed against both host Miami (Fla.) and Iowa at the Whitten Center Pool on Tuesday.

The Commodores fell 191-70 to the Hurricanes while dropping a 178-83 decision to the Hawkeyes.

Kailia Utley paced the Dores with a pair of second-place results, with Faith Knelson finishing among the top three in two races as well.

Vanderbilt will next visit Georgia on Jan. 13, with the meet scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m. CT.

Meet Highlights
-Utley was runner-up in both the 100 and 200 fly.
-Knelson placed second in the 100 breast, with Taylor Carey and Liv Gooding tying for fifth in the race.
-Knelson led Vandy again in the 200 breast after finishing third in the race, one spot ahead of Carey.
-Mercedes Traba touched the wall fourth in the 1,000 free, the first individual event of the afternoon, and was also fifth in the 500 free.
-Abby Francis was the Commodores’ top finisher in the 50 free after placing fifth, while Grace Ciaramitaro touched the wall fifth in the 200 back and Ellie Taliaferro finished fifth in the 200 IM.
-Vandy was third overall in the 200 medley relay to open the meet and placed fifth in the 400 free relay to close out the competition.

Notes
-Utley was less than a second off the victorious time in the 100 fly after posting a 56.23 mark and was 1.15 second behind winner in the 200 fly with a time of 2:02.85.
-Knelson’s 1:05.31 time in the 100 breast was less than two seconds behind the first-place finisher in the race.
-Francis recorded a mark of 24.36 in the 50 free, less than a second behind the winner of the event.
