Sept. 10, 2013

Vanderbilt’s freshman class of distance runners has been ranked the No. 5 recruiting class in the nation according to Flotrack.

The trio of Reagan Anderson, Carmen Carlos and Courtney Kriegshauser make up the freshman class for the Commodores. All three bring impressive credentials to Nashville and add quality depth to a quality roster.

“Every year we try to raise the level and quality of our recruiting classes and this year was our best, especially when you take into account our full class which includes our track and field recruits,” Head Coach Steve Keith said. “For the three distance freshmen, this is a nice honor and speaks well both to our present and future. We look forward to their contribution over the next four years.”

Anderson is the reigning Gatorade Cross Country Runner of the Year from Delaware and brings with her the eighth fastest high school time in the 1600 meters according to the ASICS Fast 100 rankings. In her collegiate debut at the Belmont Opener she ran 19:11.70 to help the Commodores down Tennessee and Kentucky.

Carlos is a four-time Alabama XC state champion at the 6A level and was named the Gatorade Cross Country Runner of the Year in Alabama in 2012. She finished 12th at Foot Locker last fall and claimed the two-mile title in 10:25.30 at the New Balance Indoor National. Carlos covered the 5K course at Percy Warner Park in 18:38.71 at the Belmont Opener in her first collegiate race.

Kriegshauser was the Texas 1600 meter state champion in 2011 and finished fifth in 2012 before heading to Vanderbilt. Her times in the 1600 meters (33rd) and 3200 meters (97th) both appear in the ASICS Fast 100 rankings. She was the Dores’ top freshman in the Belmont Opener running 18:28.37 over the 5K course.

“We are excited to see our three freshmen receive national recognition for their accomplishments at the high school level,” assistant coach Rhonda Riley said. “Reagan, Carmen and Courtney have had a smooth transition into our program this fall. It will be enjoyable to see their progression this season and throughout their careers at Vanderbilt.”

Vanderbilt hosts the Commodore Classic Saturday at Percy Warner Park. The men’s 8K race begins at 9 a.m. and women’s 5K race begins at 10 a.m.
