Commodores' MG in tie for eighth at SEC's

Second Round Results

SEA ISLAND, Ga. – The seventh-ranked Vanderbilt men’s golf team fired a second-round 294 at the SEC Championship in Sea Island, Ga., and is in a tie for eighth with LSU on the team leader board with total of 580 (286-294). Junior Matthias Schwab is the team’s individual leader after two rounds with an even-par score of 140 (66-74), which places him in a tie for third individually.

The Commodores counted Schwab’s 74, freshman Will Gordon’s 72, sophomore Theo Humphrey’s 73, and senior Carson Jacobs’ 75 on Saturday in very windy, tough conditions at the par-70, 7,005-yard Seaside Golf Club. Vanderbilt counted only four birdies on Saturday, compared to 16 in the first round on Friday.

“I thought we got off to a solid start today, which was important, and really we played good through 12 holes,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “However, we lost some focus in the middle of the back nine and that kept us from having a good score today. When we do the simple things correctly, make good decisions, and focus on the right things we are a good team. However, we have to continue to have more consistency in doing these things.”

Kentucky leads the team standings with a score of 566 (277-289), two shots better than the University of Georgia. The Bulldogs’ Lee McCoy is the individual leader with a two-under, 138 (68-70), a shot better than Auburn’s Matt Gilchrest and two shots clear of Schwab and six other players in a tie for third.

“I am excited to see how our team will respond tomorrow,” said Limbaugh. “It’s another opportunity for us to take a good step and we have to focus on playing our best golf tomorrow.”

Vanderbilt will tee off on hole number one at 7:30 ET and will play with Tennessee and LSU Sunday.
