Commodores, Gamecocks draw 0-0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Commodore women’s soccer team opened up Southeastern Conference play with a 0-0 draw against No. 23 South Carolina, Friday at the VU Soccer Complex.

Senior goalkeeper Rachel Bachtel tied a season-high with seven saves to earn her fourth shutout of the season (the 20th shutout of her VU career).

South Carolina held a 14-9 edge in shots during the game, but only a 9-8 advantage in corner kicks.

Both teams had a number of dangerous chances. Vanderbilt best shot came in the 60th minute, when junior Candace West fired from the top of the 18-yard box and hit the crossbar. Bachtel’s biggest save came in the 78th minute when USC’s Kira Campbell took a pass at the corner of the six-yard box and redirected it toward the inside of the near post.

The Commodores end their four-game homestand on Sunday when No. 7 Florida visits Nashville. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. CT kick-off at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex. The first 500 fans who donate a canned good will receive a Vanderbilt soccer scarf as the Commodores join the Southeastern Conference’s “Together We CAN” initiative.
