Feb. 27, 2010

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Vanderbilt track team completed day two of the SEC Indoor Championships on Saturday afternoon.

The day began with the pole vault competition as junior Katherine Hendricks set a new Vanderbilt indoor pole vault record with a jump of 12-2.75. The previous record was set a mere two weeks ago when Hendricks and fellow Commodore Meagan Martin cleared 11-11.75 at the ISU Classic in Ames, Ia. Hendricks finished 15th.

Representing Vanderbilt in the preliminaries of the 60 meter dash were Anna Carr and Taylor Jackson. Carr sprinted a season-best 7.67 for a 24th place finish. Jackson also had a season-best performance in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.71, good for 26th place.

Carr, Jackson, and sophomore Teegan Hill also competed in the preliminaries of the 200 meter dash. Led by Carr, the `Dores all finished within five-tenths of a second of each other with Carr placing 21st with a time of 24.91. Jackson was not far behind with a time of 25.03, good for 23rd place. Hill sprinted to 29th place with a time of 25.39. Hill also competed in the 400 meter dash preliminaries, finishing in 26th place with a time of 59.36.

“Anna and Taylor had season best days in both the 60 and the 200,” noted Vanderbilt distances coach Steve Keith. “(It was) great to see them really rounding into form. (It) speaks well for what they can carry over into the outdoor season.”

For the distances, sophomore Louise Hannallah came up big for the Commodores, finishing 7th in the 3000 meter run and earning the first Vanderbilt points (2) of the Championships. Hannallah finished with a time of 9:59.36. Fellow Commodore Alexa Rogers also had a strong performance, finishing 10th with a time of 10:05.48.

In the one mile run preliminaries, Rita Jorgensen qualified for the finals on Sunday with a time of 4:50.58, finishing 7th. Teammate Kristen Findley finished a strong freshman indoor campaign with a time of 5:05.50, good for 16th in the preliminary.

“Rita finished very well and ran a little better than we thought today. Great to be in the final, so we’ll see what happens tomorrow,” commented Keith.

The final day of the SEC Indoor Championships concludes tomorrow. The Commodores will be competing in the one mile run final, the distance medley relay, high jump, and the 5,000 meter run.
