After getting a little taste of competition in December, the Vanderbilt track team returns to action this weekend, hosting the Commodore Invitational. The two-day meet, which opens on Friday, is scheduled to feature a total of 31 college squads — 16 women’s teams and on the 15 men’s side — who will be representing 17 schools. The meet is one of five events that Vanderbilt is hosting this season, which includes four home meets for the Commodores and one high school meet (the Vanderbilt High School Invite). Here’s a closer look at this weekend’s meet:
Good measuring stick: With a solid field of teams coming to Nashville, this weekend’s meet will serve as an early-season barometer for the participants. The meet will feature five teams from the SEC — Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi State, Tennessee and host Vanderbilt — along with teams from the ACC and Big 10. Scheduled to participate are: Alabama (men and women), Alabama A&M (M/W), Auburn (M/W), Belmont (M/W), Georgia Tech (M/W), Lipscomb (M/W), Michigan (M), MTSU (M/W), Miss. State (M/W), Murray State (W), South Alabama (M/W), Tennessee (M/W), Tennessee St. (M/W), Tennessee Tech (W), Trevecca Nazarene (M/W), Vanderbilt (M/W) and Western Kentucky (M/W). The field will also include several club teams: Atlanta Track Club (M), Bell Athletics (M), Music City Mavericks (M), Nashville Running Company (M) and Thinking Feet Track Club (M/W).

Most recent meet for VU: The Commodores opened the season hosting the Indoor Opener on Dec. 5. Highlighting the day for Vanderbilt was the performance of Katherine Delaney in the mile run. The senior from Laguna Niguel, Calif., won the mile with a time of 4:51.85. The time would have been the sixth fastest by a Commodore in 2014. Vanderbilt also had five second-place finishes with Jennifer Edobi posting a time of 55.07 in the 400 meters, Skyler Carpenter going 3:14.68 in the 800 and Courtney Kriegshauser running 9:49.77 in the 3000 meters. Sarah Goodale and Ashlyn Hare also finished in a four-way tie for second in the high jump with a mark of 1.66 meters (5-5.25). Courtney Clayton finished third in the mile with a time of 4:58.78. Vanderbilt’s 4×400 relay team of Edobi, Clayton, Erin Hardnett and Lydia Witty also finished third at 3:52.15. Sarah Bell also soared to a mark of 3.90 meters(12-9.50) to place third in the pole vault.
QUOTING THE COACHES:
Head coach Steve Keith:
On the long break between meets for his team. First real meet of the season is really just a starting point. I like our fitness but not having competed for quite a while, this may take a little time to adjust.
On the excitement of his team about competing at home. Our home meets get better and better and the facility has had a few improvements so we’re very excited. A great competitive opportunity for the team and a great spectating opportunity for our track fans.
Associated head coach Clark Humphreys:
On getting back into the swing of competition: The first meet after the holidays is always quite a shock. No matter how well you prepare, the competition experience isn’t there yet and everyone is rusty. It’s been at least 6 months since many of these athletes have competed so its always exciting to see what happens.
On the overall health of the team after losing Tierney Price to an injury: Well, we just got bad news about Courtney Clayton. She’ll have to sit awhile with some stress fracture/reaction issues. She’s a big impact athlete for us as an individual and a relay member. The rest of the squad is healthy and looking good.
