One day after Vanderbilt had two athletes score team points in the pole vault, the Commodores had another dynamic duo score team points in the 800-meter run on the third and final day of the SEC Track and Field Championships. Senior Courtney Clayton medaled with a third-place finish and a time of 2:04.12, which is also a new school record. She was joined in the 800-meter finals field by freshman Reagan Bustamante, who took seventh overall with a time of 2:07.70. Clayton’s finish earned six team points for Vanderbilt and Bustamante’s performance added two more.
Junior Megan Huebner placed 13th overall in the 5000-meter run with a time of 16:36.45, which was more than six seconds faster than her old personal-best time. Senior Carmen Carlos was the next Commodore across the line with a 15th-place finish and a time of 16:45.82. Freshman Devon Grisbaum recorded a time of 17:47.30 and finished 35th in the race.
The Commodores ended the meet on a strong note in the 4×400 relay. The relay team of Becca Schulte, Lydia Witty, Courtney Clayton and Jenn Edobi finished with a time of 3:40.81, which places them ninth all-time on the Vanderbilt outdoor season performance list.
Up next for the Commodores will be the NCAA East Regionals Meet. The top 48 athletes in individual events in the East region will qualify for the meet, along with the top 24 marks in team relays. The 2017 NCAA East Regional will take place in Lexington, Ky. from May 26-28.
