The SEC Track & Field Championships kicked off on Thursday and the Vanderbilt Commodores set the tone with a strong first day, including two runners qualifying for the 800-meter finals, which will take place on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. (CT).
Senior Courtney Clayton ran the fastest 800-meters time among all competitors in the prelims with a time of 2:05.66 to clinch a spot in Saturday’s finals and she will be joined by freshman Reagan Bustamante. Bustamante, who is competing in her first SEC Outdoor Championship meet, qualified with a time of 2:07.26 to snag the final wild card spot in the finals.
Bustamante’s time was also one of two personal-best marks Vanderbilt earned in the 800-meter run. Sophomore Ginger Hutton’s time of 2:11.85 marked the other new personal best. Maddie Criscione and Lydia Witty also competed in the 800 meters and finished with times of 2:10.17 and 2:19.71, respectively.
Senior Sarah Goodale set new personal bests in two of the four heptathlon events that took place during day one. Goodale bookended her performance on Thursday with new all-time best marks of 14.12 in the 100-meter hurdles and 25.49 in the 200-meter dash. In between the personal-best times were marks of 5–5.00 in the high jump and 35–11.00 in the shot put. Goodale currently ranks 10th overall in field with three events remaining.
The Commodores will be back in action on Friday, beginning with the final three events of the heptathlon. Goodale will compete in the long jump at 10:30 a.m. (CT), javelin at noon and the 800-meter run at 2:00 p.m. to conclude the heptathlon.
