Catamounts Catch Commodores in Final Seconds

Vandy falls on basket just before final buzzer

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vonterius Woolbright hit a driving layup with 1.5 seconds remaining Tuesday to lift Western Carolina to a 63-62 victory over Vanderbilt men’s basketball at Memorial Gymnasium.

Woolbright’s basket capped a contest that saw the two teams trade the lead three times in the final minute. The Catamounts improved to 9-2 on the season, while the Commodores are now 4-7.

Woolbright finished with a double-double, posting game-high totals with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Russell Jones Jr. added 16 points and five rebounds for Western Carolina, and DJ Campbell finished with 12 points.

Ezra Manjon led Vandy with 18 points, including the team’s first 10 of the second half as the Commodores fought back from a deficit at the break. Tyrin Lawrence scored 10 points, Evan Taylor and Tasos Kamateros finished with eight points each and Paul Lewis ended up with seven. Taylor and Carter Lang paced Vanderbilt with eight rebounds apiece.

The Commodores’ final nonconference road game is set for Saturday at Memphis, with tip-off against the Tigers slated for 3 p.m. on CBS Saturday.
