Nashville, Tenn. — A 5,000-meter personal best performance by sophomore Shannon Capps in a third place finish provided the top Commodore highlight during the opening day of competition at the 12th annual Vanderbilt Invitational.

Capps, from <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Knoxville, Tenn., broke the 18-minute barrier for the first time, finishing in 17:56.98 to claim third overall.

The 5,000-meter winner, Erika Schneble, was a welcome sight to Vanderbilt distance coach Jim Spivey. Schneble, a Vanderbilt junior competing unattached after putting together an All-American outdoor campaign for the Commodores in 2004, was running competitively for the first time in nine months. The native of Hendersonville, N.C. captured the race in 17:23.84.

A Commodore freshman distance runner, Julie Eckerly, earned five team points with a fourth place finish in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:07.69.

Junior Caitlin Shannon also earned team points, finishing eighth in the 1,500 meters in 4:38.96. Teammates Alisa Cotter and Nadiyah Humber finished ninth and 10th.

At the conclusion of the first day, Vanderbilt was seventh in the team rankings with 15 points. Southeast Missouri leads with 32 points. Southeast Missouri is also leading the men’s division after the first day with 35 points.

Six meet records were established Friday, with more likely Saturday when activities scheduled throughout the afternoon.
