ATHENS, Ga. —Freshman Jennifer Cannon opened competition at the Bulldog Heptathlon with a bang, scoring wins in the 100 meter hurdles and 200 meters to stand in second place. Cannon’s 3,260 points are just behind Georgia’s Lucie Ondraschkova’s 3,310 points.
Cannon ran the 100 meter hurdles in 13.75 seconds, which is the third best time in Vanderbilt outdoor history. She was the only runner under 14 seconds in the race.
She followed that up with a third place finish in the high jump at 1.64 meters (5′ 4.5″) and a fifth place finish in the shot put at 10.14 meters (33′ 3.25″).
Friday’s action concluded with another Cannon win in the 200 meters. She completed the race in 24.60 seconds, edging Alabama’s Lacey Dent (24.83). The 200 time is the sxith-best in Vanderbilt’s outdoor record book.
Assistant coach Clark Humphreys is thrilled with the freshman, especially as she goes up against Ondraschkova, who has qualified for multiple NCAA Championships.
“I’m very pleased with Jen’s composure over the first day of events,” Humphreys said. “Day two should be very exciting.”
Cannon was also pleased her effort, which included three personal records in the four events.
“Today was a really good start towards my ultimate goal of making nationals,” Cannon said.
The heptathlon concludes tomorrow with the long jump, javelin and 800 meters.
