Five Commodore track and field athletes established new personal records Friday while competing at meets in Alabama and North Carolina.

Sophomores Reagan Bustamante and Kacie Breeding provided the biggest highlights from the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C. by smashing their collegiate-bests in the 1,500-meter run and 3,000-meter steeplechase, respectively.

Freshman jumper/sprinter Sophia Falco also enjoyed a banner day competing at the War Eagle Invitational in Auburn, Ala., eclipsing her career-best in the triple jump by more than a foot.

Bustamante, who has shown superb form early in the outdoor season, was the top collegiate finisher in the 1,500 at Duke. A product of Springfield, Va., Bustamante finished in a dazzling 4:21.19, the fourth fastest time ever by a Commodore. Bustamante’s effort also broke her previous-best at the distance by nearly five seconds.

Two other Commodores running in the same 1,500-meter race as Bustamante, junior Ginger Hutton and sophomore Kendall Derry, also set new personal standards. Hutton shaved more than two seconds off her former best with an eighth-place finish in 4:26.90. Derry earned a 11th-place result in 4:27.83, nearly a second quicker than she had run the distance previously.

Breeding, also a sophomore, continued to rewrite her personal record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Breeding became the fifth-fastest Commodore ever in the event with a time of 10:43.86. The performance, which resulted in a third-place finish, sliced seven seconds off her former record at the distance set a month at the Florida Relays.

In Auburn, Falco put together her best collegiate triple jump series. On consecutive efforts early in the competition, she produced jumps of 40-02 (12.24 meters). Entering the meet, Falco had never jumped beyond 39 feet as a collegiate athlete. Falco now has the fourth longest triple jump ever by a Commodore.

The Commodores will return Saturday with several athletes competing at both Duke and Auburn.
