Abi Brighton's OT goal lifts Dores

NASHVILLE, Tenn – Abi Brighton broke a scoreless tie with the golden goal in overtime to lift the No. 18 Vanderbilt soccer team to a 1-0 victory over visiting Tennessee Tech on Thursday night in the regular season opener.

The Commodores (1-0) held 63 percent of the possession on the night and outshot the Golden Eagles (0-1) by a 21-3 margin.

Vandy’s offense peppered TTU goalkeeper Isabelle Austin all night but did not break through for a goal until the 97th minute.

In the overtime period, Sophia Gorski received the ball eight yards from the goal and laid it off to Brighton who blasted home a right footed shot from 20 yards out to the left panel.

Peyton Cutshall finished with a team-high six shots — two of which were on target.

In goal, sophomore goalkeeper Kate Devine notched two saves to earn the shutout.

Vanderbilt will return to action for another home game scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday versus Purdue at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex.
