NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt baseball will close out its fall practice slate with its annual Black and Gold Series starting this Thursday, October 15, at 6 p.m. at Hawkins Field.
The series, usually a three-game affair, was extended to five games by head coach Tim Corbin after the team missed the first four days of fall practice time due to weather.
The series starts with games on Thursday and Friday at 6 p.m. before taking a break on Saturday due to the Homecoming football game against Georgia. The series will pick up again on Sunday at 1 p.m., and will continue on Monday at 8 p.m. before concluding on Tuesday at 6 p.m. All of the games are free admission and open to the public.
The first two contests will be nine inning affairs, while the final two contests on Monday and Tuesday will be seven innings each. Sunday’s game length will depend on the available pitching and will be either seven or nine innings. Monday’s game is an 8 p.m. start due to the student-athletes’ class schedules.
The captains of the teams are senior Andrew Giobbi and junior Russell Brewer for the Gold and seniors Brian Harris and Drew Hayes for the Black squad. They picked the teams after practice on Tuesday. The Gold team will be coached by Josh Holliday, while Larry Day will skipper the Black squad.
“This series will be a good pre-cursor to our trip to Japan in November,” said Corbin. “It should be competitive enough to give us a read of what we have at this point and what areas we need to improve upon.”
