BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Freshman Sara Barron’s school record in the mile highlighted day one action for the Vanderbilt track team at the Indiana Relays.
Barron ran the mile in 4:44.44, finishing third in the women’s mile invitational and setting a school record. Kristen Findley also ran in the findivational, finishing 10th with a sub-five minute time of 4:58.80.
Another freshman, Skyler Carpenter, picked up a win in the long jump. The Topkea, Ind., native posted a mark of 5.64 meters (18 feet, six inches) to edge Western Michigan’s Iris Campbell by a quarter of an inch.
A pair of Commodores finished tied for third in the high jump. Jennifer Cannon and Janetra Gleaves both cleared 1.65 meters (five feet, three inches), to finish in a three-way tie for third with Murray State’s Ashley Conway.
Alyson Hasty earned a top-10 finish in the pole vault, clearing 3.55 meters (11 feet, 5.75 inches).
Three Vanderbilt runners will be in tomorrow’s 60 meter hurdles finals. With the top-16 of today’s preliminary races advancing, Gleaves placed 10th (8.80), Jennifer Cannon was 12th (8.81) and Faith Washington was 16th (8.93). Carpenter just missed the finals, placing 18th with a time of 8.99.
Vanderbilt also had a pair of impressive performances in the 3,000 meter invitational. Hannah Jumper, who is the reigning SEC Cross Country Freshman of the Year, finished third with a time of 9:40.45. Lily Wiliams was close behind, finishing fourth in 9:45.21. The times were personal bests for both Jumper and Williams.
Jordan White also ran the 3,000 meters, with her time of 9:55.47 outpacing several runners in the invitational field. Kristen Smith also put up a solid 3,000 time of 10:21.70.
Day two action gets underway at 9:00 a.m. CT in Bloomington. In addition to Gleaves, Cannon and Washington in the 60 meter hurdles finals, look for strong Commodore competition in the high jump, the 800 meters, the 400 meters, the 4×400 meter relay and the 5,000 meters.
