Baseball Players Garner More Awards

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Rivals.com named five Vanderbilt players to its All-American teams and Mike Minor was named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball today.

Pedro Alvarez, Dominic de la Osa, David Price and Casey Weathers were named to Rivals’ first team, while shortstop Ryan Flaherty earned second team plaudits.

Alvarez finished the year with a team best .386 batting average and 68 RBI along with 18 homers and 21 doubles.

De la Osa was third on the team with a .378 batting average and led the team with 20 homers and 20 stolen bases.

Price finished the year with an 11-1 record and 2.63 ERA. His 194 strikeouts this season are second all-time in SEC history behind Ben McDonald’s 202 in 1989.

Weathers, one of five finalists for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, led the team with 12 wins and seven saves. He was one of just three players in the country to lead his team in both categories. He went 12-2 with a 2.37 ERA and had 75 strikeouts and 21 walks in 49.1 innings.

Flaherty finished second on the team with a .381 batting average to go with four homers, 23 doubles and 57 RBI. He was also a steady player in the field with only eight errors at shortstop all year.

Mike Minor ended his freshman campaign with a 9-1 record and 3.09 ERA. He had 88 strikeouts and 19 walks in 90.1 innings and also recorded two saves early in the season before moving into the weekend rotation.
