NASHVILLE — Nick Christiani pitched five innings of one-hit shutout baseball to lead the Gold squad to a 4-3 win over the Black in the rubber game of the three-game intrasquad series Sunday afternoon at Hawkins Field.
Christiani struck out six in the start and left the game with a 4-0 lead. The Gold squad got on the board in the first with a sacrifice fly by Dominic de la Osa and a RBI double by Parker Hanks.
Brian Harris tripled to start the fifth and scored on a RBI double by Matt Shao to make it 3-0. Shao moved to third on a throwing error by Black starting pitcher Josh Zeid and then scored on a squeeze bunt by Pedro Alvarez to make it 4-0.
The Black squad rallied back in the seventh with three runs off of reliever Steven Schwartz. Ryan Flaherty and Alex Feinberg had RBI singles to lead the way.
The Black team had a couple of chances to tie the game late but could not convert. Carter Hawkins led of the eighth with a walk off of reliever Caleb Cotham and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Alex Hilliard. Brad French then flew out and Jonathan White struck out to end the threat.
David Price came on in the ninth for the Gold squad and got Ryan Flaherty to ground out before giving up a base hit to Kurt Lipton. The All-American then got Diallo Fon to hit into a double play to end the game and picked up the save in the process.
Lipton and Feinberg led the Black with two hits each, while Brian Harris led the Gold squad with two hits as well.
The game was the conclusion of the Commodores fall practice slate. The team will spend the rest of the semester working on conditioning before restarting practice in January in preparation for the 2007 season.
