NASHVILLE — Andrew Giobbi’s RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning broke a 5-5 tie and lifted the Gold squad to a 6-5 win over the Black in the first game of the Black and Gold Series Thursday night at Hawkins Field.
Parker Hanks led off the ninth with a double to right-center and then advanced to third on a grounder by Adam Cronk. Giobbi then laced a single down the right field line to score Hanks to win the game.
The Gold squad squandered an early 4-0 lead, built on a two-run homer by Dominic de la Osa in the first inning and a RBI double by Adam Cronk and a RBI single by Giobbi in the second.
The Black got on the board in the third on a solo homer by Ryan Davis off of Gold starter David Price. They then took the lead with a four-run fifth to make it 5-4. Jonathan White had a two-run triple and Ryan Flaherty added a RBI single to tie the game. Flaherty would then score on a throwing error by catcher Jay Moreland to give the Black the lead.
The Gold team took advantage of a throwing error by the Black in the seventh to tie the game.
Stephen Shao pitched four innings of two-hit relief to pick up the win for the Gold, while Casey Weathers gave up the run in the ninth in his second inning of work to get the loss.
Several Commodores had two hits in the game, led by Giobbi, Cronk and Hanks for the Gold. Freshman Alex Hilliard had two hits as did Ryan Flaherty to lead the way for the Black.
The teams will play the second game of the three game set Friday night at 6 p.m.
