TEMPE, Ariz. – No. 1 Arizona State had 16 hits including three homers in an 18-6 win over Vanderbilt Saturday afternoon at Packard Stadium.
The Commodores (1-1) will close out the tournament tomorrow at noon against Miami (Ohio). The RedHawks lost to the Sun Devils 7-0 on Friday night and will face Oregon State tonight.
The Sun Devils (2-0) scored three runs in the third to take a 3-0 lead on a two-run double by Ike Davis and a RBI triple by Jason Kipnis. They then broke the game open with a six-run fourth inning, keyed by a grand-slam homer by Brett Wallace and a two-run shot by Kipnis to make it 9-0.
Davis added a two-run single and Kiel Roling added a RBI single of his own in the third to make it 12-0.
“Arizona State is a team that loads up on mistakes and if you give them cookies to hit, they are going to make you pay,” said Vanderbilt head coach Tim Corbin. “They are strong enough that they are just not singles, but balls over the fence. They are pretty dangerous from that standpoint.”
Vanderbilt got on the board with two runs in the sixth with Shea Robin coming through with a RBI single. Ryan Flaherty extended his hitting streak to 37 straight games with a single in the frame.
ASU added four more runs in the sixth and two more in the eighth for its final runs of the game.
The Commodores scored a run in the eighth on a RBI single by Brad French and three more in the ninth to close out the game scoring.
Brett Jacobson (0-1) took the loss for VU, giving up six runs on four hits in three innings of work with five strikeouts and four walks. In all, Vanderbilt gave up 16 hits and also walked 10 with four hit batters. Sean Bierman, Mark Lamm, Kellen St. Luce and Steven Schwartz all saw their first collegiate action on the mound.
“We just didn’t through enough strikes,” added Corbin. “We had 14 freebies against two and we paid for it.”
Jonathan White and Shea Robin collected two hits apiece to lead Vanderbilt. Senior Adam Cronk had a RBI single in his only at bat. Several offensive players also saw their first collegiate action: Alex Hilliard, Joey Manning, Jordan Wormsley, Curt Casali and Aaron Westlake. Manning and Casali had singles in their first at-bat.
