NASHVILLE — Day one of the annual Black & Gold meet at Vanderbilt opened with a pair of strong performances in the 1,500 and 3,000 meter invitationals for the Commodores.
Freshman Sara Barron set a personal best with a time of 4:21.80 to finish second in the invitational field for the 1,500 meters. Barron as the top collegiate finisher in the race.
Classmate Lily Williams finished fifth with a time of 4:27.88.
“Sara was not afraid to go after it,” Assistant Coach Clark Humphreys said. “She took the lead into the last lap and held it until the last 10 meters. She was agressive for a freshman and it made for an exciting race.”
The 3,000 meters saw Vanderbilt’s Liz Anderson finish third. The sophomore posted a time of 9:39.70 to edge teammate Allie Scalf. The senior was fourth with a mark of 9:46.70.
Jordan White placed seventh in the 3,000 (9:48.70), while Hannah Jumper placed ninth (9:55.68) and Grace Orders was 13th (10:02.18).
“Liz has been battling injuries lately, but when she’s healthy, she’s one of the best,” said Humphreys. “She showed that tonight. She’s a gamer and she lived up to the billing. The time is right for her.”
Humphreys was also proud of Scalf’s performance as the senior opens her final collegiate outdoor season.
“Allie was so impressive,” Humphreys added. “She had a really strong showing as a senior which was just great to see.”
Anderson, Scalf and White all posted times that rank among the top 10 in program history.
Day two action at the Black & Gold will get underway at 10:00 a.m. with field events (discus, javelin, high jump, long jump and women’s pole vault). A full slate of track action begins at 11:00 a.m. and culminates with the 4×400 relay scheduled to begin just after 5:00 p.m.
